Sept. 26 – Oct. 20, 2019 Rise Up Presented by The Coterie at The Coterie Theatre, Kansas City The tide was turning – though many states in the South disagreed. It would soon be illegal to segregate black Americans on public buses, in waiting rooms, or in restaurants. And yet, in the early 1960s, some cities and towns in America kept actively discriminating. It was time to draw attention to illegal discrimination, and face terrifying violence with peaceful resistance.
October 1, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. The Kingdom Choir Helzberg Hall | Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts London’s The Kingdom Choir is best known for their show-stopping rendition of “Stand By Me” at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May 2018. The performance, seen by a global audience of over 2 billion, instantly catapulted The Kingdom Choir to worldwide fame. October 4, 2019 @ 8:00 p.m. An Evening with Branford Marsalis Presented by Folly Theater at The Folly Theater, Kansas City Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most influential and respected figures in contemporary music. The NEA Jazz Master, Grammy Award winner and Tony Award nominee is equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and sitting in with members of the Grateful Dead, but the core of his musical universe remains the Branford Marsalis Quartet.
October 5, 2019 @ 7:00 p.m. Randall Goosby, Violinist in Free Recital Presented by Harriman-Jewell Series at The Folly Theater, Kansas City At 22, violinist Randall Goosby has already racked up an impressive set of achievements. At 13, he became the youngest person ever to win the impressive Sphinx Concerto Competition. Goosby has performed as soloist with orchestras across America and has been honored as a Rising Star of the Stradivari Society.

He plays an inventive, contemporary sound and knows how to capture an audience’s attention. Pianist Everette Freeman has toured with Oleta Adams, performing with a deliciously intricate yet fluid grace.

October 18, 2019 @ 8:00 p.m. Ruthie Foster Presented by Folly Theater at The Folly Theater, Kansas City Ruthie Foster is known for her powerful, soulful voice and Bluesy sound that can be heard across the U.S. on this artist’s expansive tour. Most recently awarded a Living Blues Critics’ Award for Female Blues Artist of the Year, Ruthie has gathered accolades including seven Blues Music Awards, three Austin Music Awards, and the title of an “inspiring American Artists” as a United States Artist 2018 Fellow, among many other awards.
October 18 – November 10, 2019 (various times) For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf Presented by Kansas City Repertory Theatre at Copaken Stage, Kansas City At a time when there were almost no stories about women of color, poet, activist, novelist, and playwright, Shange penned a play that has become a seminal and treasured work of American theatre. Seven African American women, each identified solely by a color, traverse class, gender, sexuality, and geography in this intensely personal “choreo-poem” that weaves spoken word and dance. Only the second play by a black woman to be produced on Broadway, it won Obie and Tony Awards and has been mounted on university campuses in every state in the U.S.

Over the years, her repertoire has included pop-style ballads, jazz and blues, show tunes, funk, R&B, gospel and well known standards.
October 25, 2019 @ 7:30 p.m. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet with Pianist Han Chen Presented by Harriman-Jewell Series at Kauffman Performing Arts, Kansas City Some of the most exciting dance in America is coming out of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. Founded in 1996, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet combines adventurous American athleticism with European classical and avant-garde traditions. The New York Times says that Aspen Santa Fe Ballet “raise the bar, and then they jump over it.”
